If you’ve ever wondered how light you can go without giving up the essentials, this gear setup is for you. In my latest video, I walk through every piece of gear I carry for fastpacking trips lasting up to three days during late spring, summer, and early fall. My goal isn’t simply to carry less weight—it’s to move farther, hike more efficiently, and still sleep comfortably each night.

With a base weight between 7.5 and 8 pounds, I’ve carefully chosen gear that serves multiple purposes while keeping my pack as light as possible. Every item has earned its place through real-world use on the trail.

In the video, I break down my complete gear system, including:

  • My Outdoor Vitals fast pack that comfortably carries everything I need, including three days of food.
  • My ultralight shelter system built around the Gossamer Gear Whisper shelter.
  • A lightweight sleep system featuring a Hammock Gear Economy Burrow quilt and Nemo Elite sleeping pad.
  • My stove-free cold-soaking cook system that eliminates unnecessary weight.
  • The clothing layers I rely on for changing mountain conditions.
  • My water filtration, hygiene kit, navigation tools, and essential electronics.

One of the biggest ways I save weight is by questioning every item I pack. Instead of bringing gear because “that’s what everyone carries,” I focus on what actually improves my experience on the trail. That mindset has helped me build a kit that’s simple, efficient, and reliable.

This loadout isn’t meant to be the perfect setup for everyone. Instead, it’s an example of how thoughtful gear choices can dramatically reduce pack weight while maintaining safety and comfort. Whether you’re new to ultralight backpacking or looking to shave pounds from your current setup, I think you’ll find ideas you can apply to your own gear.

If you’d like to see every item up close, hear why I chose it, and learn how everything fits together into an 8-pound system, be sure to watch the full video. I explain each piece of gear in detail, discuss the trade-offs I made, and share practical tips that can help you build a lighter, more efficient backpacking kit.
