The Ultimate Sub-16 oz Hybrid Shelter? My Gossamer Gear Whisper Review

When I was looking to dial in my ultralight backpacking kit for late spring, summer, and early fall, I had a very specific wishlist. I wanted something incredibly light, completely bugproof, and minimalistic—yet roomy enough that I wouldn’t feel like I was sleeping in a coffin.

After weighing my options, the Gossamer Gear Whisper Light Shelter rose straight to the top.

It’s a unique hybrid that feels more like a single-wall tarp than a traditional tent, but with a brilliant twist: a full perimeter of bug netting that goes flush to the ground. Let’s dive into why this 15.5-ounce setup has earned a premier spot in my pack.

The Weight Breakdown: 15.5 Ounces All-In

When I say this shelter is light, I mean it’s ridiculously light. I don’t just look at the trail weight; I look at the “all-in” weight of what actually goes into my pack. Here is how the numbers shake out:

ComponentMaterial / DetailsWeight
Shelter TarpDyneema (Includes Dyneema stuff sack)9.6 oz
Stakes7 Groundhog Minis (In Dyneema sack)2.3 oz
Ground SheetLarge Nylum (Can be trimmed down)3.6 oz
Total WeightComplete Shelter Setup15.5 oz

Pro Tip on Stakes: Because this shelter relies on a tight, straight ridge line between the head and foot ends, I highly recommend swapping out the Groundhog Minis for full-sized Groundhogs on the main ends. It gives you that extra holding power to pull the pitch perfectly taut.

The Trekking Pole Puzzle (And a Brilliant Workaround)

The Whisper is designed specifically around the Gossamer Gear LT5 trekking poles. It requires a high end (pitched at 130 cm) and a low foot end (which requires a 23-inch height).

If your go-to trekking poles don’t collapse down to exactly 23 inches, you might run into an issue. While you could go hunting for a perfect 23-inch stick in the woods, I found a couple of better solutions:

  • The Full Aluminum Pole Kit: Gossamer Gear sells separate aluminum poles. They add about 4.7 oz, bringing your total weight closer to 20 oz.
  • The 1.5-Ounce Workaround: If your favorite poles hit 130 cm for the head end but won’t shrink for the foot end, just buy the pole set and only bring the short 23-inch aluminum pole. It weighs a measly 1.5 ounces, keeping your overall kit at a phenomenal 17 ounces!

Roomy Minimalism: What It’s Like Inside

Don’t let the “tarp” classification fool you; this thing is incredibly spacious. It is essentially a 1.5-person shelter. There is more than enough room for a wide 25-inch sleeping pad, your pack, and even a dog if you have a furry hiking companion.

Because the head end pitches at 130 cm, I can easily sit up, eat a meal, and get dressed without doing awkward floor gymnastics. It lacks interior pockets and a traditional vestibule, but a smart “pop out” design near the door acts as a perfect makeshift vestibule to protect your gear.

Smart Weatherproofing

The perimeter bug netting is cleverly engineered to angle inward toward the center of the shelter. This ensures that when rain hits the Dyneema canopy, it drips straight off the edge and onto the ground, rather than wicking down the netting into your living space. Just ensure your ground sheet is laid on top of the interior netting flap to keep everything bone dry.
