Is the Gossamer Gear Kumo Fastpack Worth It? Full Review & Performance Insights

Gossamer Gear Kumo Fastpack Review: My Experience After 300 Miles

If you’re looking for a lightweight, versatile pack for fastpacking or ultralight backpacking, the Gossamer Gear Kumo Fastpack (now called the Fast Kumo) deserves your attention. I’ve used this 36-liter fastpack for over 300 miles, and in this review, I’ll share its key features, performance, pros and cons, and whether it’s worth adding to your gear list.

Why I Chose the Gossamer Gear Kumo Fastpack

I wanted a pack that could keep up with my fastpacking adventures—something light, comfortable, and easy to access while on the move. The Kumo Fastpack checked all those boxes, and after hundreds of miles, here’s what stood out.

Key Features and Performance

Capacity and Organization
The Kumo offers 28 liters of internal storage plus 8 liters in external pockets, giving you a total of 36 liters. It includes:

  • A large mesh front pocket
  • Mesh side pockets
  • Running-style vest straps with multiple mesh pockets
  • A removable minimalist hip belt with two pockets

This design makes it easy to organize gear and access essentials without stopping.

Weight and Load Capacity
The pack weighs just 20.7 ounces (small/medium size) and is designed to carry up to 20 pounds comfortably, with a max load of 25 pounds. Personally, I’ve carried 13–14 pounds without any issues.

Material
Made from aerobic nylon, the pack isn’t waterproof and can absorb water. I use a pack liner to keep my gear dry, which solves the problem.

Convenient Features

  • Fold-over lid for quick access and securing items like a foam pad
  • Static cinch lines to keep gear tight and prevent shifting
  • Trekking pole holders and an ice ax loop
  • Removable sit pad for added rigidity and comfort during breaks
  • Running vest-style straps with multiple pockets for water, snacks, and phone—perfect for staying on the move
  • Minimalist hip belt that keeps the pack snug and moves with you

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Feels like part of my body—no bouncing or shifting
  • Excellent organization and quick-access pockets
  • Lightweight and ideal for fastpacking or ultralight setups

Cons:

  • Not waterproof; aerobic nylon absorbs water, adding weight in heavy rain

My Verdict

After 300 miles, I give the Gossamer Gear Kumo Fastpack an A grade. It’s one of the best packs for fastpacking, ultralight backpacking, and trail running. If you prioritize speed, comfort, and organization, this pack is worth it—just make sure to waterproof your gear with a liner.
